BTEC: Art & Design Level 3 Extended Diploma
Why study Art & Design Level 3 Extended Diploma ?
This highly successful, exciting, practical two-year course is equivalent to three A Levels and is ideal if you want a career in art and design. Projects within the course offer experiences in a broad range of pathway disciplines including sculpture, printmaking, fine art, graphic design, multimedia and digital photography.
You can progress to our Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma at Havant Sixth Form College or for the strong student the BTEC Extended Diploma course could fast-track you to degree level study.
What will I study?
You will have the opportunity to explore and experience a wide range of approaches to art and design processes, building and developing a strong command of technical skills. You will study a range of specialist skills, developing responses to stimuli within fields including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Sculpture and Photography. BTEC Art & Design ‘core skills’ are embedded in every project and include drawing, research of artists, experimentations with materials and development of ideas towards outcomes. You will generate a broad portfolio in response to exciting projects set within a range of art-based disciplines.
During your Second Year you will have the opportunity to develop work within ‘specialist’ genres of your choice, developing direction and personal identity within your portfolio ready for applications to Higher Education or employment.
The course concludes with a final major project where you have the opportunity to devise your own brief within your intended specialism. This work will form part of a high profile public exhibition to celebrate your achievements at the end of your course.
How will I be assessed?
The course is continuously assessed through the development of your portfolio. You will complete a total of 18 units, measuring competencies across both ‘Core’ and ‘Specialist’ units.
What are the entry requirements?
Ideally you should have GCSE Art & Design grade C or above with 3 other GCSEs at grade 4 and above or a BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design. At interview we will ask you to bring in some work to demonstrate your abilities.
What Havant adds to this
Throughout the two years there are opportunities to visit galleries and exhibitions and take a cultural trip abroad; most recently we visited New York.
You will be able to make use of the extensive studio facilities while working with teachers who are practising artists. You will be able to participate in life-drawing, local, national and international gallery visits, artist’s workshops and public art ‘live’ projects.
Your specialist ‘Art Tutor’ will help you with one-to-one portfolio building, personal statement construction and write you a specialist reference to accompany your application. At the end of the course your work will be showcased in a high-profile public exhibition.
